The Rundown - October 9

Welcome back, folks.

As some of you know, we do our best to support the local creative ecosystem because it supports us.

Synergy.

A considerable amount of effort is put into the increasing number of events here in the Triangle. Parties, art shows, you name it. Don’t try and keep up. We’re here to do the heavy lifting.

Say hello to The Rundown!

Again.

Every Monday, the RUNAWAY editorial team will do our due diligence to curate a digestible snapshot of the week’s events and what we recommend. This is not a catch-all because no one has time to catch it all. This is your weekly itinerary to let the good times roll.

Formerly known as the best kept secret, I guess that we just leaked it.

Detroit legend Royce Da 5’9” will headline The Underground! as part of this year’s Black Wall Street: Homecoming networking conference.

His legacy in the underground circuit is cemented by his immense rhyming capacity, his association to Eminem, the duo’s brief success as Bad Meets Evil, and his standout track “Boom” produced by Moogfest alum DJ Premier. But for anyone who graduated college after Obama’s first term, Royce is an unknown. A emcee from a time where rappers… rapped. It would be easy for me to wax on about a forgotten era of lyricism in hip-hop where Royce thrived, but he fits the demographic of BWS attendees and his style aligns with the local opening talent.

Opener one of two is J Gunn whose approach to music is cued from emcees like Royce. While music is his primary tool of choice, Gunn is an aspiring business mogul with his hands in a number of ventures including his own line of cigars. Black Wall Street: Homecoming is an event he will surely feel comfortable in, making maneuvers on the side while prepping to share a stage with one of the game’s greatest emcees… and Royce Da 5’9”.

Shouts to Durham is as close to a certified classic album as we’ve got in North Carolina. Rapsody and Lute both dropped albums this month, and still, I would stack G Yamazawa’s debut up against either of them. Relocated to Cali but played both Hopscotch and Beats n’ Bars this year, ramping up the accolades while showing out for the home team. His ascension atop the mountain is well-earned. Shouts brings it all to the table: bars, message, grooves, did I say bars? It’s got bars.

The transition from spoken word poet to rapper isn’t a guaranteed translation but it’s clear G is a student of the craft. He’ll make the perfect T.A. for Royce’s bar exam.
